View Full Version : Wind turbines and Wildlife icecape67 29-09-09, 10:51 PM interesting article in the guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/sep/27/wind-power-wildlife-lucy-siegle TheMorg 16-07-10, 08:28 AM The kind of large scale wind turbines the article talks about are the individual components of large scale wind farms. These are built by the Wind industry, which is a monopoly of big hitting companies which have massive profits each year and enjoy a growing market. The Energy they produce is sustainable, but their manufacture is not. It is, in reality, actually quite wasteful and uses some pretty nasty chemicals. also think about the blades end up once they reach the end of their 20 year grantee. These 40m + non-biodegradable monsters are destined for land fill. I see no note worthy relationship between bird mortality and wind turbines, certainly not in comparison to the death rate of wildlife caused directly by pollution from fossil fuels. I am however not a supporter of wind energy used on this level, certainly not ashore. It is not the green technology it is said to be, at least not at this level and definitely not as an industry. As other people have pointed out, wind energy is best used in local projects. Putting Chernobyl and the disgusting use of nuclear weapons to the side, how many birds have been killed by nuclear power? moguitar 16-07-10, 08:43 PM There was a BS claim of millions of birds and bats killed by the slow revolving monsters. Maybe some are built with fiberglass and other noxious chemical using processes, but many are built with recyclable steel or aluminum. A friend is building a large one using carved GluLam beams. I believe the Air X and Air Breeze are extremely strong and long lasting polymers. Still, with the amount of PVC plastic produced by the petro-chemical industry each year and the amount going into landfills, like nuclear waste, but thousands of times worse, I wonder if the blades are made out of that stuff with any wind generator builders. It isn't very recyclable and lasts over 50K years before breaking down into other toxics. One pound vaporized can kill 400 grown men in 15 seconds, or cause 1000 cases of cancer. It is enough to kill the entire population of Earth hundreds of times over. It is used in so many things....... I think it should be totally banned. But that wasn't the toxics you were exposed to. I doubt if much is used in the wind industry, but plenty is used for shower curtains, vent house pipes, and shit looking easy care siding that is an environmental nightmare. I doubt if it is strong enough for the blades. |
